CHAMP
Branch Global asked me to take part in an exciting marketing event that would fuse art, great food, live music and sports entertainment, more specifically, a boxing match. The proceeds from the event would benefit charities of the homelands of the two boxers.
Design Rationale
The client wanted something bold and strong. So the high contrast of the black and white only colour palette, coupled with a simple headline sans-serif font made the logo. The client also expressed that being a “CHAMP” meant living a lifestyle of excellence in whatever you were pursuing. This was represented by the five stars, usually associated with a rating system, and five being the highest. The stars were also inspired by retro and vintage boxing posters, which used them quite extensively in the posters that I researched.
After the logo was completed, it opened a path for the rest of the design to keep up the style choices of the logo. The designs for the tickets, posters and promotional flyers were a tribute to the old style boxing posters, which always had great simple typography and simple line shapes and boxes.
The inspiration of having mirroring designs was taken from watching the weigh-in events that usually take place just prior to most boxing matches. They usually end in the two opponents standing toe to toe staring each other down. I wanted that similar feel when the posters and flyers would be side by side. Each having a distinct colour and feel, but having the same design to keep the look consistent.
